Our clients who split their time between LA and Costa Rica presented us with a challenge. Their LA residence was too large to maintain for their family, necessitating a downsize. Meanwhile they dreamt of renting it, not just during their stays in Costa Rica, but long term to another family.
Antonym's solution unfolded in two steps. First we segmented their home, assigning 500 sq ft to a snug Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) that became their comfortable home base. Next we constructed an 800 sq ft second-story addition dedicated to the new 4 bedroom, 4 bath unit that they now rent out. The vertical expansion allowed us to create fresh outdoor spaces, inclusive of private rooftop decks for both our clients and their tenants.
The evolution of this 1940s cottage celebrates the blend of contemporary appeal and multifunctionality, reflecting the lifestyle of the modern families who call it home.
