I appreciated the way the project unfolded and know what could have been a daunting, mind numbing experience turned out to be an enjoyable collaboration of possibilities. Her professional yet easy-going approach helped me to make choices I originally ruled out, but over time grew to embrace, and now love as signature pieces of my remodel. The design observes principles of Feng Shui, through the placement of stairs and arrangement of the kitchen, to funnel qi or balanced energy throughout. The sleeping quarters above is equipped with a projector and drop-down screen and below is Antonym’s office which converts into a flex space where occasionally a yoga mat gets rolled out and a hammock hung up. Repurposed Ikea bed slats are used for the loft guardrail and a DIY wall of modular plywood shelves and cabinets display books and hide clutter. A leftover patch of dirt between the main house and garage became an unexpected opportunity to expand the livable space outside with a climbing wall and lounge area. They envisioned a charming garden cottage, hoping for a two-bedroom, two-story ADU. While their initial vision exceeded their budget, it challenged us to find a creative solution: a one-story structure with a lofted mezzanine that achieves the desired functionality and space while aligning with their budget. At the heart of the design is the innovative use of balloon framing, a construction method that utilizes long, continuous vertical studs running from the foundation to the roof. This approach, combined with a high pitched 11:12 roof angle, creates a striking vaulted volume for the office and outdoor garden deck while reducing lumber usage and cost. This project is more than an ADU; it’s a thoughtful response to creative aspirations and budget realities.
